I read an article saying that a Gmail exploit has been found. I’ll just quote what the exploit is:
If you have an email address with special characters like ‘John.Smith@gmail.com’, you could most likely be receiving emails meant for ‘JohnSmith@gmail.com’, which is a similar address without the special character. However, it was noted that emails sent from gmail accounts to addresses with special characters are delivered normally.
I don’t see how that is an exploit, I see it as a feature. My old gmail address has a special character (a period) in it. Since the username was my first and last name, I put the period there so that the two words looked separated (since they didn’t allow underscores). When I gave it out to my friends I would tell them that they didn’t have to put in that period in the address, the email would still get to me anyway. I rarely see email providers other than Gmail allow periods in the username. I’m still wondering why Gmail doesn’t allow people to use underscores.
