I’ve switched hosts to DreamHost (note: link contains a referral). I signed up back in March, when they had a sale where they tripled all the space and bandwidth. This sale has been extended all the way to August 29th. I had another domain set up here, but then I decided to do a domain/host switch. Why? I wanted more space.
Here are some of the things I like about DreamHost:
- They offer SSH access. It’s not necessary, but very useful.
- IMAP email.
- If you need some help there’s a lot of resources available – the knowledgebase, the wiki, and the discussion forums.
- The amount of disk space and bandwidth you get grows every week. In my case, on the lowest plan, I get an extra 20MB/1GB per week, or an additional 1040MB/52GB per year. For me that’s equivalent to unlimited disk/bandwidth, because it’ll take me forever to use it all.
- You get to make suggestions to the DreamHost team, such as adding a new feature, upgrading a feature, etc. and sometimes they’ll implement them.
- Support for both PHP4 and PHP5.
- Neat stuff like python and ruby on rails.
Here are a couple of things I don’t like:
- The MYSQL setup is a little awkward. For each database you set up, you have to have a unique hostname as well.
- When I first signed up the mysql servers kept on going down. It’s all good now.
- If you set up additional emails the usernames are hard to remember, as they’re in a format like m0021729.
Overall I like DreamHost enough to reccommend them.
Anyway. What with the host switch and the URL changes there might be a few broken links on the site. If you find any, do let me know.

The sql thing is actually why I don’t use my dreamhost account. I hate having to wait for it to “set up” and it just seems a bit awkward altogether. I guess I’m a cpanel girl at heart.

Yeah it does take a while for things to get set up, and not just the sql. But I don’t mind all that much.
