Bookmarks, Online and Offline

I found yet another online bookmark manager today, Spurl. It reminds me of Furl - Spurl only has one extra letter! They both do the same thing - they keep a local copy of the site you bookmark. Both have category support, a RSS feed of your links, and the ability to quickly add a link using a bookmarklet. Spurl has the option of integrating your del.icio.us bookmarks with your spurl bookmarks - although I’m not sure why you would need to use both at the same time. smile And I can access my bookmarks via the sidebar. But ... with Furl you can download a copy of all archived links, which is pretty nifty. So right now I’m still contemplating which one I’d like to use permanently.

Anyway, I already have another online bookmark manager, powered by Sitebar. I’ve been using this script for a long time now - I’ve got almost 700 links stored there. I don’t plan on moving these links over to my Furl or Spurl though. For me, the best part about Furl and Spurl is that they keep a copy of the page. So I don’t think it makes much sense to use Furl/Spurl to bookmark a site that constantly changes - for example, the front page of a news site. What I’ve been doing with Furl (as I mentioned in a previous entry) is just bookmark news articles whose contents won’t change.

Another good thing about my Sitebar is that using a Firefox extension, I can access my online bookmarks right from my web browser! I got that working today when I upgraded my Sitebar version to 3.2RC2 (more info here). I can only add/modify links to my sitebar using the normal web interface, and with a click of a button I can synchronize it with the ones on my browser.

While I was looking into all these bookmark options I found a lot of interesting links today. Except I’ve added them all over the place - my sitebar, blatherskite, and furl/spurl. I’ll probably make another portal type page and add all the RSS feeds so I (or you readers) can see them all on one page. smile
