I read on Slashdot that Gmail is finally offering IMAP support for their email accounts. According to the comments in the ./ post they’re only rolling it out to a few accounts for now. I eagerly checked my gmail account and to my surprise I found they’d enabled IMAP on my account! (In the past I’ve always been the last to get the new Gmail features.)

I prefer using IMAP over POP3 (which Gmail has had available for a while now) because with POP3 I somehow always manage to lose email when I’m downloading it to a desktop mail client. Ever since I started using Gmail, I’ve stuck to checking my email using the web-based interface. Now I get to use both the web-based interface and a desktop client, woohoo!

Since I recently made a post with a picture of a sea otter (“recently” was 3 months ago, but it’s only 2 posts down from this one, heh), I thought I’d link to this cute cute video of sea otters holding hands. I first found the link to the video off BoingBoing.net, but it has been linked all over the place too. The video, posted onto YouTube, caught the attention of the CBC and they did a news segment on the otters, which are found in the Vancouver Aquarium.

Here are a couple of neat updates in the past few days:

• ExpressionEngine 1.5.2 and the Forum module 1.3.2 have been released.
• The beta version of Parallels allows you to boot into Windows XP from the Bootcamp installation, among other things.
• Shapeshifter 2.4 has been released, and it’s a Universal Binary! Which means I can finally use it on my Intel iMac. Shapeshifter is a theme switcher.
• Joyent Bookmarks has been added to the Joyent suite.

I signed up for Google’s hosted domain email several months back, and I finally got accepted. Here’s a nice overview of what it’s like. It’s now set up and working with one of my other domains. I used forward all of the email from this domain to my Gmail account

Some thoughts:

• I’m already using the regular Gmail.
• There are hundreds of emails in that account and there isn’t any way to transfer it over.
• Their terms of service says “Google is providing the Service during the Beta Term free of charge; however, Google reserves the right to charge a fee for the Service after the Beta Term.” I don’t want to start using it and then later find I need to pay a ton of money to continue using it. Hopefully they will keep a free service for a limited number of users and then charge to get more users.

On the other hand:

• I have the ability to create up to 25 users, all with 2GB of space, the same features as regular Gmail, and an integrated calendar and chat. Nice, but only if I had that kind of community where it would be useful.
• Remember back in the day when all of the “teen domains” used to offer free web based mail from places like bigmailbox.com and everyone.net? I signed up for a lot of those, but the one I can clearly remember was the one from muted. This could bring the trend back!

So then, I would like to offer up free web based mail at onetruepairing dot com, thanks to Google. You’d need to contact me though so that I can set up an account for you. They’d be good email addresses for fanfic writers or something.

Isn’t that so elite?

Yikes! It’s been over a week since I’ve posted on here? Where have I been? I don’t even know myself. Last week passed by in a blur.

What happened (online, anyway):

pMachine announced a design contest, the ExpressionEngine $15,000 Shoutout. You can enter Personal, Commercial or Core sites. The top prize is $1,000, an EE Commercial license and a forum module license. The contest closes on February 28. Now while I’d love to enter, I don’t think I have much of a chance of winning, and plus, I’d want to redesign the site and I might not be able to find the time to do it.

Last Monday, my site got suspended. Yep. It was because I was running this app called Instiki, and it was causing too much of a load on the server. Now I should have realized this, seeing as sometimes it took minutes for a page to load, and I didn’t think about what that would mean. I used Instiki as a personal wiki, and I loved it because it used Textile (I use Textile on this blog too). Since I couldn’t use Instiki anymore, I had to go look for another wiki script. I ended up going with MediaWiki even though it meant having to use another text markup format.

Stikipad was launched just over a week ago. It’s a hosted wiki service. I tried it out before I found out that I couldn’t use Instiki anymore. I really liked it because it’s like a much more improved version of Instiki. But I still went with MediaWiki because I’d rather host all the information myself instead of elsewhere.

While looking at this year’s Bloggies nominees, I found Drawn!. On the site, I found some news about a new Sam and Max computer game. I loved the game Sam and Max Hit the Road when I was a kid! There was once plans for another game, called Freelance Police, but it was cancelled. Now, Telltale Games is developing a new game with these characters. Here’s an interview with Steve Purcell, the creator of Sam and Max. I can’t wait for it!

In the meantime, there is a Sam and Max webcomic. You need to put your mouse over each panel to get the whole story. It’s awesome.

The above comic is from Calvin and Hobbes, by Bill Watterson. Some people decided to imitate the many faces of Calvin, and the result is hilarious! The cutest one is of this little boy, Nathan, who is sooo adorable.

A while back I posted how to search for all of the unlabelled email in Gmail. It involved typing out a list of all labels, searching for email that doesn’t have those labels, and storing the search in a persistent search. Well now there’s a greasemonkey script called Gmail Unlabelled that does this exact thing. It’s much better than my solution, because you don’t have to worry if you add more labels!

One thing to note if you use this is that your label’s can’t have spaces in them. I converted all of my spaces to dashes and all was well.

Hahaha. Today’s my birthday. And guess what I got in my inbox? An invite to WordPress.com. A coincidence, no? I immediately used the invite to set up a blog there.

I put my email address on their website to get an invite a while back, not because I really wanted a new blog, but because I wanted to see how it worked. I feel a bit sorry now for choosing “yvonne” as a username. In the future there may be some other Yvonne who wants this address more than I do.

I have a couple of comments already but I have to go take a shower as I’m going out for dinner tonight.

I somehow missed this before, but Gmail now allows you to change the From address on outgoing mail. That’s awesome news, since I forward all of my domain email to my gmail address.

Opera is celebrating their 10th anniversary by giving away free registrations for their web browser. The deal is only for today. It’s so strange to think that Opera has been around for 10 years – wasn’t it earlier this year that Yahoo celebrated their own 10 years of existence? I didn’t think Opera had been around for as long as 10 years.

I wrote my impressions of Opera a few months ago, but hadn’t really used the browser much after that. I’m glad that Gmail works with that browser now!
