Barrier to Comments
Sunday, February 01, 2004
Almost a year ago, I wrote that I had disabled membership registration for posting comments on my site, saying that “I have another use for it, which I’ll reveal later.” For the life of me I can’t remember what other use I found for it. I cycled through the next dozen entries after, and there was no mention of it again, or when I decided to turn member registration back on.
Member registration for comments is still on right now.
When I check my site stats, I often see people leave the site at either the comments.php page (which is a permalink page for a post) or the members/register.php page, which contains the form to register. Which leads me to think that maybe sometimes people want to leave a post, find out they have to register, and then leave because it’s too much of a bother.
But believe it or not, there are benefits! I’m going to list some here.
- It’s just like signing a guestbook! If you register, I’ll know that you’ve visited the site. If you have a site, I can return the favour.
- I don’t have to be worrying about comment spam, and installing things like MT-Blacklist etc.
- You get your own profile page (see mine) with all the comments that you’ve made.
- I get to see comment statistics, and member statistics.
- You get members-only content. I don’t have anything too interesting, but you never know what I could do in the future…
- You get to see my protected entries.
That’s all I can think of right now, but if you’re a new visitor and you haven’t commented yet, don’t feel afraid to register!

Saturday Senses #23

You go to a job interview and they have you seated in a waiting room for over an hour. In this room there’s a watercooler, a coffee machine, some magazines, candies, crackers, 5 other candidates and the receptionist. It’s the end of the day, you’re tired, really hungry and you have a headache.
[taste]:: You’re so hungry you can actually hear your stomach. There are the crackers and the candies, the coffee machine and the watercooler. All this across the room and the place is really silent. You don’t know how longer you’ll have to wait. Do you prefer being very hungry with a headache or go grab some crackers and candies, maybe coffee and water?
I would get the crackers and candies, and some water, because I think my headache will get worse if I don’t. I assume that they put the food and drink there so that people will take it!
[touch]:: Lets say you decided to go for the crackers and candies, because you were really starving. How many do you grab? How much is just enough in a situation like this?
I would grab two or three crackers, and one candy. Then I’d take a whole lot of water.
[sight]:: After an hour, you have already looked at all magazines from 1995, your eyes have scanned the room a hundred times and youre having trouble keeping them open, being as tired as you are. All the other candidates are already gone. What do you do to to avoid falling asleep?
I really don’t know what I’d do, I don’t think I’d be able to think of anything to say to the other people in the room. I guess I would stand up from my chair to keep myself awake.
[smell]:: You are finally called in to your interview. The interviewer hasn’t said a word yet and instead is looking at some papers, maybe your resume. You’re just sitting there and a secretary comes in, puts some papers on the desk, says something quick to the interviewer and leaves. The second she’s gone, you smell something funny and, boy, it stinks big time… It wasn’t you, but you’re sure the interviewer can smell it too and if it wasn’t him, he might be thinking it was you or the secretary. What to you do? Do you say anything?
I love this question! It’s so funny. I’d be soooo embarrassed if that happened to me in real life, even if I hadn’t done anything. I don’t think it’d be professional to blame the secretary, so I’d just smile and say nothing. And try not to think of the smell.
[hearing]:: The interviewer finally opens his mouth. This guy looks really scary and intimidating, but the second he starts talking, you feel an uncontrollable urge to laugh: he talks very fast and has a funny voice that contrasts with his physical appearence. You know you shouldn’t laugh, but you can’t help it and a giggle slips out. How do you handle this?
I’d .... try to turn it into a cough. And look down into my lap or something, I wouldn’t want to be looking at the interviewer. *eek*

LOTR Parody
Sunday, February 01, 2004
This condensed parody version of the LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring is soooo funny!
There’s also the parodies for The Two Towers and The Return of the King, which I am going to read right now.
More imports from older logs

I got the comment body in email notification hack working, yay! Which means that if you subscribe to email notification when a comment is added to a post, it’ll email you the body of the comment within the email.
Also, I imported a lot of old entries into this database. The entries were from a few years back, and they were in the MT export format already, so it was really easy. My last post id on this blog was 858, and now it’s already jumped to past 1000! The old entries are on a separate blog right now, I don’t know whether I’ll release them to the public just yet.
I have to work on some kind of layout for them. Anyway, it’s nice to have them all in one place.
Movie soundtracks
Saturday, January 31, 2004
There was this movie commercial on TV right now. I wasn’t watching TV directly, I just had it on in the background while I was surfing. But then I heard this tune that sounded very familiar. I turned my head to the TV to see an image of a guy cheering in a hockey jersey, and then the commercial ended. I don’t know what movie it’s for.
I have realized where I’d heard that tune - on the soundtrack in the movie A Knight’s Tale. The music seems like it one was written by a composer specifically for the movie.
So that got me wondering, are the original soundtrack music (or rather, the score) of a movie reused in other movies?
I suppose it doesn’t matter if they are, as long as the music matches the tone of the movie. I love movie soundtracks, both the songs with lyrics and the instrumental ones - they add to the whole experience of the movie. Like the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King soundtrack, which I’ve been listening to the past few days. It’s so amazing.
You know what? They should have a website that provides a listing of all the songs that are played in a movie. Like the ones that are shown in the movie credits, but also with descriptions of when the song is played. This is done for some TV shows already, so, why not movies? Sometimes an official soundtrack for a movie is released, but it’s not complete because it doesn’t include all of the songs played in the movie.

one hundred mispelled words
Wednesday, January 28, 2004
Hahahaha, in the title I just realized I made a spelling mistake. ![]()
While looking for words to put in my words blog, I found a list of commonly misspelled words. I know I’ve managed to misspell a lot of them before.
You know what word that I used to misspell a lot (that isn’t on the list)? Environment. Because the “n” is silent, I’d always put enviroment. But after a lot of mistakes, this is one of the words where whenever I write it I automatically check that I put the “n” in it.
Viruses are making you stronger
Wednesday, January 28, 2004
In this article, they mentioned that Bill Gates said computer viruses and hackers helped make Microsoft products more secure. That could be true, but at what expense? Millions of users who rely on their products (mainly the operating system) are going to suffer because it wasn’t secure in the first place.
It reminds me of this thing that my friend said, that if you get sick when you’re younger, it makes you grow taller because your body becomes stronger while you fight the virus. I didn’t believe her when I heard it, but a lot of the people in my class at the time believed that too!
Oh, and while I’m still talking about viruses, there’s a new worm floating around. I got a couple of suspicious looking emails today, which might have been that.
Edit: Also, what’s this?!? Sir Gates?
Flash Boyfriend
Monday, January 26, 2004
Yay! I finally got Max, my virtual boyfriend, to say he loved me! After 897 hours and 18 visits (that’s what he counted, anyway).
It’s this flash game where you “meet” and “go out” with this boy, and you get to choose the outcome of the game.
