Google Mail Choices
Saturday, June 10, 2006
I signed up for Google’s hosted domain email several months back, and I finally got accepted. Here’s a nice overview of what it’s like. It’s now set up and working with one of my other domains. I used forward all of the email from this domain to my Gmail account
Some thoughts:
- I’m already using the regular Gmail.
- There are hundreds of emails in that account and there isn’t any way to transfer it over.
- Their terms of service says “Google is providing the Service during the Beta Term free of charge; however, Google reserves the right to charge a fee for the Service after the Beta Term.” I don’t want to start using it and then later find I need to pay a ton of money to continue using it. Hopefully they will keep a free service for a limited number of users and then charge to get more users.
On the other hand:
- I have the ability to create up to 25 users, all with 2GB of space, the same features as regular Gmail, and an integrated calendar and chat. Nice, but only if I had that kind of community where it would be useful.
- Remember back in the day when all of the “teen domains” used to offer free web based mail from places like bigmailbox.com and everyone.net? I signed up for a lot of those, but the one I can clearly remember was the one from muted. This could bring the trend back!

So then, I would like to offer up free web based mail at onetruepairing dot com, thanks to Google. You’d need to contact me though so that I can set up an account for you. They’d be good email addresses for fanfic writers or something.
Show Entry Views Extension
Sunday, June 04, 2006
If you’re tracking your entries in EE using the entry views tracking feature, this extension I’ve written may be useful for you. It shows the entry view counters for each entry on the Edit page in the Control Panel.
Here’s a small screenshot:

There are four views to track and you can choose which ones you want to have displayed on the Edit page. In the screenshot I’ve chosen to show only the first two.

Version 1.1.1 of Extension

I’ve made another update to the Link Entry from Control Panel to Your Site extension. It wasn’t playing nice with other extensions.

Someone explain Vox to me
Saturday, June 03, 2006
SixApart’s newest project, Vox was unveiled on June 1st. I read their info page and I still don’t get how it’s different from LiveJournal. Couldn’t they have just improved LiveJournal instead of making another service? I wonder if a lot of people who are currently using LiveJournal are going to switch over to Vox. I’m pretty muched tied to LJ because I have a Permanent Account there.
I do want to try out Vox though. Anyone have an invite to send my way?
