Look at all those unused credits

Friday, July 15, 2005

I don’t really log into BlogExplosion these days. I only do so when I get a newsletter from them, and I got one of those yesterday. I surf 20 blogs, which is enough to get entered into the monthly contest, and then I leave.

Well when I logged in today I saw that I have 792 unused credits. These credits are from those that I haven’t auto-assigned to my blog. Each credit I believe gets you one hit. Which means that if I had some big announcement to make on my blog, or if I were say selling something, I could just assign all of those unused credits to my blog all at once, and 792 of those hits immediately. I wonder if people actually do that?

More Control Panel Colours

Tuesday, July 12, 2005

On Sunday I made two themes for the ExpressionEngine control panel. I put up in screenshots in my gallery. Now I get to choose between red, green, and blue (which is the default). Cool huh?

Update: You can download them now, plus I made a purple one. Click on the thumbnails for a bigger screenshot.

It is possible to use the themes without the images. Just open the css file, and replace all instances of url({path:image_url}AN_IMAGE.jpg) with none.

Update 12/18/2005: The themes have been updated to work with EE 1.4. If you still want the EE 1.3.2 versions, please contact me.

Update 07/01/2007: The themes have been updated to work with EE 1.6.

Do You Read Your Archives

Tuesday, July 12, 2005

If you have a blog, do you often go back and read your old entries?
Yes
No

Hey, it’s a poll post! The last time I put up a poll was back in … May. blank I already have a question for my next poll lined up.

The question this time is whether you go back over your archives (if you have a blog that is). I used to read my past entries, but now I don’t any more.

So that’s where I’ve heard the song!

Saturday, July 09, 2005

A few months ago I made this post about how iTunes in Canada were offering a free download every week. The first song I got was called Sway, by The Perishers. I said in that post I was sure I had heard it before somewhere. Well, yesterday I was playing the Sims 2 University, and I heard that song come up on the stereo! The lyrics were garbled but that was definitely the same song. I did a little searching and found that all the songs on the college rock station on the stereo are songs from real bands!

Ah! Success!

I finally got the Acronym Module to work again! There was something wrong with my mcp.acronym.php file so I couldn’t upgrade, uninstall, or anything. I tried uploading the file many times via FTP, via the FTP utility in UltraEdit, via web-based FTP, and none of those worked. Then I tried uploading it using the File Manager Module, but that didn’t work either. Eventually I went to the File Manager in Cpanel, created a new file, and cut and paste in the contents from mcp.acronym.php. And that somehow worked! I gotta go add the acronym tags on my site again.

Oh, and the poll module should be working again. I really need to post a new poll. It’s been a loonng time since I posted one, and I had planned on doing a weekly poll. :p

As for other EE related stuff, I want to add the avatar of the currently-logged in member, but it turns out you need to use php parsed on input to do that. I think when I have time I’ll write a plugin to do that, because I have php parsed on output.

One last thing – Gravatar.com seems to be down.

Del.ici.ous Director

Wednesday, July 06, 2005

I love this del.icio.us director script. It is a nice and fast way to view the links in your del.icio.us account. That’s the main reason I like all of these ajax technologies – they’re fast.

Now if only you could use the del.icio.us director to browse other people’s bookmarks on del.icio.us. Or if you could search other people’s bookmarks.

Upgrade Summary

Sunday, July 03, 2005

I ran into a couple of problems with the upgrade:

  • The user message template problem.
  • The custom_profile_data tag did not work (it’s now been fixed).
  • The linklist module stopped working (it’s now been fixed too).
  • The poll module doesn’t work.
  • Couldn’t get the Acronym module version 1.5 to work, but I’d had the same problem since version 1.3, so I just stopped using it altogether.
  • EE is still adding borders to images (which doesn’t validate), so I had to hack the EE source again.
  • I had modified the Magpie plugin, but I couldn’t remember what I did to it, so I had to compare the old version with the new version line by line (which was my fault, really). blush

For comparison purposes, here’s a picture of the old control panel, and the new control panel. I do really like the new control panel. The only thing I miss about the old one is the orange colour.

Other things I like about this new version:

  • The publish dropdown. You can now hover over the Publish link and get a list of all your weblogs. It saves me an extra click.
  • The publish page. It has been significantly reworked. When I first saw the preview, I wasn’t sure if I liked it, but I’m quite used to it already. It really does free up a lot of space in the publish page, which is good.
  • Custom tabs! You can now add links on the tab to your most frequently accessed pages within the CP. I click on the links in the modules tab a lot, and now I don’t have to click as much.
  • Quick save. The entry is saved to the database, but it isn’t published and no pings are sent. Now I don’t have to use my custom ‘draft’ status.
  • The ability to tie the blacklist with the .htaccess file.
  • Spell check. I don’t have the pspell library or whatever it is installed, but I did try out the spell check in the forums and it was really nifty. I must find out if I can get this library installed..
  • You can now move entries from one weblog to another, provided that they use the same field group. This is awesome! There’s no way to bulk move entries, but I’m just glad this functionality is there.

There are a lot more major updates, but the ones above are the ones I really like. The full changelog is listed here.

What’s changed for you, the readers:

  • You can now upload your own avatar. This avatar will be displayed next to your comments.
  • You can also upload a member photo and edit a signature, but I haven’t decided if I want to display that in the comments yet
  • You can now ping me when you update your site! Here’s the URL for you to ping. And if you want me to ping your site, I can do that. Not sure whether pinging too many sites will slow things down for me, though.
