I Caved

Saturday, July 30, 2005

I caved and got the EE forum module. It’s installed now. I don’t expect much activity. smile I thought of using the poll feature that is built into the forum module, instead of the separate poll module. But it looks like people have to register before they can fill out the poll, and I don’t really want that.

While I was at the pMachine site, I upgraded to EE 1.3.1, which was released today.

This is what Rick has to say about the release:

ExpressionEngine 1.3.1 is primarily a maintenance release, providing fixes for bugs that have been reported recently, including a problem experienced by people running PHP 4.4.0. EE 1.3.1 also has a number of small enhancements and minor code updates. All existing ExpressionEngine users are encouraged to update.

Discussion Forum 1.1 enables you to submit forum posts along with weblog entries and content for your site, and associate forum posts with those entries. In other words, you can have a “discuss this in the forums” link in your weblog/site entries.

Things to Remember When You’re Formatting

Thursday, July 28, 2005

When formatting I forgot to back up my

a) fonts
b) photoshop actions
c) EvilLyrics lyrics

The fonts and lyrics I can re-download, but the photoshop actions – grr
I really must make a list of stuff to back up the next time I ever format my computer.

Nice and Clean

Thursday, July 28, 2005

I formatted my laptop today. Spent hours backing up my files. And by backing up, I mean burning all of my files onto a CD-RW and then dumping them onto my dad’s comp. It has 3.5x more hard drive space than my laptop. The problem was that my one CD-RW can hold 650MB of data and I had about 11GB of data to back up. I tried to set up a home network but I couldn’t get it working.

Right now I am installing XP Service Pack 2. And then I’ll have to move all of my files back onto my laptop again. ouch

It’s all worth it though. The reason I wanted to format in the first place was to get rid of my Linux partition. Two years ago I set up my computer so that it will dual-boot into either Windows or Linux. After about a year I stopped logging into Linux altogether so I thought I might as well free up some more space. If I want to use Linux, I’ll just use one of those Live CDs.

Oh. And I had a look at those control panel themes I made on my dad’s comp. The red one looks awful on that monitor. The green one is wayy brighter but still tolerable and the purple one is OK.

Decisions Decisions

Wednesday, July 27, 2005

I’ve got 4 days to decide whether I want to get the ExpressionEngine forum module. I still don’t have any use for it. The only reason I want to get it is to play with it. The 20% discount for the module ends on July 31, and I know I will be much less likely to buy the forum module after that time.

I did a search on Google and found quite a few sites using the forum module already.

Getting rid of the index

Tuesday, July 26, 2005

I tried out the instructions for removing index.php from URLs in the EE Wiki. The permalinks for this main weblog is now at /weblog instead of /index/weblog. It was pretty easy, I wish I’d done it sooner! The old links will still work too. I keep on getting these random 404 errors in the control panel, but I remember reading about this in the forums, so I’ll check and see if there’s a fix.

I’m still waiting for this feature request where you can specify category titles, so that my category URLs can be more readable. Once I can do that I’ll be pretty happy about the URLs on my site. smile

Update: Fixed the 404 errors now (I think). I had to disable page throttling.

It’s just a relief to have it back up again

Monday, July 25, 2005

My site was down pretty much all weekend. I got the dreaded “There is no website configured at this address” message and I couldn’t log into Cpanel or get email. There was a while on Sunday when I realized that the site was working, but it went down again in less than half an hour. I checked this morning and everything was back up, and it’s obviously back up as I’m typing this, and I hope it stays this way. smile

A number of changes

Friday, July 22, 2005

  • I’m changing the default mood theme on my blog to the hdcomic one, since I am kind of obsessed with Harry Potter at the moment. smile
  • I’m retiring my links blog. My experiment of merging it with del.icio.us doesn’t make sense any more. The blog will still stay on the site, but I’m moving the link off the menu at the top and moving it to the “other” section.
  • Trackbacks are now disabled on the links blog and the media log. No one sends trackbacks to those anyway. I’ve had a couple of trackback spam with those. (Hundreds of attempts, just 3 made it through. But 3 is enough to annoy me.)

Other People’s Archives

Friday, July 22, 2005

Do you read other people's archives?
Yes
No

Time for another poll again. It’s a follow-up question to the last poll. Do you guys read the archives of other people’s blogs? My own answer to this question is no, unless there is something in those archives that I’m looking for. And sometimes when I read a blog, I will go back and look at the last 1-2 weeks of entries, but nothing before that.

The Half-Blooded Prince

Friday, July 22, 2005

This post contains no spoilers.

Earlier this morning I finished reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blooded Prince. I must have been lying on my bed reading for hours, coz when I went to sleep finally it was light outside. And it took me a while to fall asleep, I was thinking of what happened in the book.

The book was very good. I wanted to read it slowly, like a chapter a day, because the next book probably won’t be out for two whole years. Didn’t end up doing that though. grin I suppose it’s a good thing I finished reading the book already. I can now stop trying to ignore places/blogs/forums which might discuss the book. There are sooo many comments I have to make about it!
