WordPress Advertisements

Thursday, March 31, 2005

I just read an article from waxy.org about advertisements on the WordPress.org site. The ads are hidden from the view of users using CSS, but search engines robots can easily find the links. My first thought was that this must be an early April Fool’s joke. But it doesn’t seem like it is…

I’ll keep up with this bit of news by checking Technorati.

Update: a response.

Yahoo 360º

Thursday, March 31, 2005

I got an invite to the new Yahoo 360º service from Vijay. At first I didn’t even know if I wanted to ask for an invite, because I probably wouldn’t use it all that much anyway. I mean, I have the an MSN Spaces blog, a Friendster/Typepad blog, and a blog at Multiply.com, and many more, but I don’t use any of them. I just stick to LiveJournal. I did get an invite eventually, and you can now check it out.

I’ve only tried it out for an hour or so, but it looks quite good. Everything loads really fast. One thing I know that’s going for me using Yahoo 360º is that I use my Yahoo email account all the time, and I’m usually logged into that account. There’s no need for log in separately and I think that’s quite convienient.

You get 100 invites right from the start, and I’ve got 99 left, so if you would like one let me know!

Del.icio.us Tag Bundles

Tuesday, March 29, 2005

There’s a new feature in del.icio.us called “tag bundles”. It provides a way to organize your tags into bundles, or categories, and I’m finding it very useful. There’s also another feature called “daily blog posting”, which I suppose allows you to automatically post your del.icio.us links to your blog. I have no idea how to set that up, though. I’ll wait until there’s some documentation. smile

The 3rd Court Contraption

Tuesday, March 29, 2005

A bunch of guys in university came up with this contraption involving a lot of moving parts. There’s two different movies available you can download and watch. It’s a lot like the Honda Accord ad, which I just love. (link from memepool)

Viruses and Anti-virus Programs

Tuesday, March 22, 2005

You know, I hadn’t really thought about what happens if you get a virus that attacks your anti-virus program until now. What if the virus disabled the anti-virus program so that the program wouldn’t detect anything? Then the virus could just completely take over your computer.

I’ve been trying out the free version of Avast! Home Edition  antivirus for the past week or so. I liked it enough. Then today, a message popped up on the screen saying that one of the files on my computer had been infected. The file in question was an executable file that is part of the anti-virus software. It asked me whether I wanted to delete the infected file, or repair it. I was worried about deleting the file, because it might be a critical file. I chose to repair it, but then I got an error because that file was already being used by another process. Of course it was, I was running the anti-virus program!

In the end I uninstalled Avast, installed AVG Anti Virus Free Edition, and used that to scan my computer. The virus was called Java/ByteVerify. Everything’s good now. smile

Merging Blatherskite and Del.icio.us

Thursday, March 17, 2005

Ever since I started using del.icio.us for my bookmarks, I haven’t seen much need for my links blog. There are numerous plugins available for Wordpress and Movable Type that allow you to grab links from del.icio.us and post them to your blog. I thought I’d try write one for myself. But it doesn’t work perfectly yet - you can tell because my last five entries were all from the link log. Out of the five, only one entry ended up posting correctly, the other four I edited/‘ll have to edit.

The cool thing about this is that I can also mirror the del.icio.us tags with my own tag (keyword) system. The not-so-cool thing is I can’t post “via” links any more.
