Proposed Categories

Wednesday, February 23, 2005

Dooce (I love reading that site by the way) has these categories on her site that I should have too:
- Enjoying
- Feeling Guilty
- How to annoy me
- How to charm me

I’d probably need to add even more categories though, such as
- How to put me to sleep
- What I learned today that everyone else already knows about
- Clumsy moment of the week
- Clumsy moment of the day
- Was it something I said? (or perhaps How to make things even more awkward)
- Squeeing Fan Moment

Did I say 2-3 seconds?

Wednesday, February 23, 2005

When I said in my last post that this site would load in 2-3 seconds, I was wrong. I’ve been sitting here refreshing at least a dozen times and each time the page load is different. It fluctuates a lot too, caching or not. I give up.

Couple of Site Related Updates

Monday, February 21, 2005

I revamped the Portal. It contains all the stuff I want to put on the front page but can’t due to clutter/speed issues. Since the portal pulls content from 5 external sites, the page loads really slowly.

The rest of the site has been loading really, really slowly as well. To try and speed it up, I turned on caching almost everywhere. I also disabled the acronyms and the mood themes. Page loads should be about ~2-3 seconds now. (Yesterday I saw a page load of 138 seconds. grr Which is over 2 minutes.)

Del.icio.us - 1494 bookmarks and counting

Friday, February 18, 2005

I’ve migrated my Sitebar bookmarks into del.icio.us. I love the Sitebar script, but since I have over 1200 bookmarks in there, it takes forever to load up. Del.icio.us allows you to display 10-100 bookmarks at one time, and since I skinned it the interface has been much more readable. (I’m not a big fan of the default colours.) Also, there is the excellent foxylicious extension that allows me to access my del.icio.us bookmarks.

To get the bookmarks from Sitebar to del.icio.us, I first exported the Sitebar bookmarks to the netscape-compatible format. The export functionality is built into Sitebar, which is great (you can also export to IE or Opera bookmarks). Then I used this script to post the netscape bookmarks to del.icio.us. The script worked fine, although twice I was throttled by the del.icio.us server. smile I didn’t try to import all 1200+ links at once though. I imported them one category at a time, but still, there was one category (with several subcategories) that had 366 links.

Once that was all done, I noticed the script didn’t import the bookmark description. That’s OK though, because I didn’t use enter a description most of the time.

The other thing I noticed about the script is that when it posts the bookmarks to del.icio.us, it backdates it so that the links won’t show up on the del.icio.us front page. That’s good, because otherwise I’d have taken over the front page. :p

Next I decided to move my ExpressionEngine links to del.icio.us, too. (They’ve been moved so many times - sitebar, spurl, pmachine, and now del.icio.us. I’m so indecisive.) Now they’re all accessible in the expressionengine tag. I think it’ll be easier for me search those links now, and plus, I can assign multiple tags to each link, something I couldn’t really do with pmachine.

( Yadda yadda yadda more import stuff )

Skinning Gmail

Tuesday, February 15, 2005

I came across an article today on how to skin del.icio.us, which led me to another article on how to skin gmail. I decided to play around with gmail because I use it more often. Using the stylesheet as a base I came up with a purple theme and a blue theme. Cool huh?

Oh, and if you look at the screenshots you can probably see what my gmail address is. I have been constantly getting emails from random people saying “I love you”. It’s both annoying and funny.

Update: You can now download the skins.

Weighted Categories Plugin

Sunday, February 13, 2005

Update 06/03/05: I’ve updated the plugin so that it will work with ExpressionEngine 1.3
Update 09/09/05: Added a sort parameter, variables for the category image and description, and cleaned up the code a bit.
Update 07/23/07: Added documentation for parent_id parameter, fixed bug when there are no results to be displayed, and variable for category URL title.

I wrote a very basic plugin to display weighted categories. Most of the credit goes to these two however. And to the person who wrote the developer documentation because I would have been lost otherwise. :p

Check out my archives for an example.

You can download the plugin here and it’s also listed in the Plugin Library.

Weighted Mood List

Monday, February 07, 2005

OK. I wrote some php code so that I could output a weighted list of my moods. I based the code on the code from the Keywords Plugin part of which was based on this code. I got something to work, even though I wasn’t sure exactly how it worked. I kind of felt accomplished.

I went back to the Keywords Plugin, because I thought it’d be neat if for each mood I could list all the entries that I have assigned with that mood. That was easy enough to code. Then I realized that I could have easily used the keywords plugin to make a weighted list of my moods, without having to write any extra code. Arghhh!!

Anyway, here it is.

Edit: Never mind, I do need the php code that I wrote. Also, if you click on the mood icon that is attached to each of the weblog entries, it’ll bring you to another page.
