Search engine

Thursday, June 17, 2004

Random thought here. I’ve tried to stop search engines from crawling my site by using the robots.txt file, meta tags, etc. I do it because I actually want to make it harder for people to find my site via a search engine. But it doesn’t matter anyway, because there are RSS search engines like Feedster and Blogdigger and so on that crawl my RSS feed. There’s also Bloglines and LJ syndication too. I could block them from visiting my RSS feeds if I wanted to, I suppose. So should I give up and remove the meta tags and robots.txt file? I’m still going to keep them there. I personally use the RSS search engines to search for content specifically on weblogs, but “normal” search engines like Google and Yahoo for non-weblog sites. I’m just making it a little harder for people to search my site because they can’t go through Google or Yahoo. smile

I miss those extensions!

Thursday, June 17, 2004

Updated my firefox extensions post. There are several extensions that haven’t been updated for 0.9 yet and I miss them, especially the EditCSS and the SiteBar/Weblinks one. blush Thunderbird 0.7 was released yesterday, but I don’t think I’m going to upgrade my 0.6 one yet.

1GB email

Wednesday, June 16, 2004

I got an invite to a G Mail account yesterday (thanks Lynda). It’s fantastic, except for two things.
- it uses a lot of javascript. They have text that looks like links, but they aren’t, so you can’t open them in a new tab or window.
- if I send an email to myself I don’t receive it in my inbox (I’ve only been waiting for 10 minutes though). If I send an email to it from another email account I receive it instantaneously. If I send it to myself, does this mean it’s only stored in the sent mail folder and not the inbox?
I’m going to check some tips and tricks sites to see whether I can figure out point #2. smile

Misleading headline or misread headline

Wednesday, June 16, 2004

I came upon chocophile.com and was scrolling down the page to take a look (after all, I *love* chocolate!) and this article link caught my eye - Can Chocolate Cure Cellulite? I was like, “What???” and I clicked the link. It is obviously not what I thought, that’d be too easy. smile I thought that you could eat chocolate and that would stop cellulite. The real “cure” is to to massage cocoa and honey on your “afflicted areas”. Ugh, no thanks. grin

Turtle Photos

Shot downstairs to take a photo (or two). It moves really fast, faster than I thought a turtle would move.

Red Eared Turtle

Tuesday, June 15, 2004

I fixed the Firefox problem by uninstalling it, and then reinstalling, but this time I didn’t import my profile over. I saved my bookmarks but not the history and cookie info etc.

Anyway. Earlier this afternoon my mom was driving me back home. We turned into our road (right here actually, but coming in from the other side) and we both noticed this tiny creature running fast across the road. My mom had to swerve so as to avoid hitting it. It was a turtle! My mom pulled over, and we got out to take a look at it. My mom, you see, LOVES turtles. She collects all sorts of turtle figurines and statues, and we had three turtles growing up. So, she picked the turtle up and brought it back home. According to my mom, it’s a red eared turtle. We don’t know what we’re going to do with it though. My mom wants to hold on to it, I want to release it (there’s a pond right next to the road, we figured it was heading back there). It’s in a tray in our backyard right now.

Edit: it’s not a red eared turtle but a painted turtle.

New toys that don’t work

Tuesday, June 15, 2004

Found out about two new things today - Mozilla Firefox 0.9 is out, and Yahoo has now upped their storage space to 100MB. Hip hip hurrah, right?? It’d be better if both of them worked properly. I installed Firefox, and installed some new extensions too. Except for the mouse gestures none of the other extensions work. psycho I’ve restarted the browser several times already (will restart my computer when I finish this post). And I don’t see any storage upgrade on my free Yahoo account, although the interface has been changed slightly. I’m not giving up yet, though!!

More on Computer Names

Monday, June 14, 2004

A while back I wrote up a post on naming computer parts. (your computer name, hard drive name, etc.) Veerle has some more examples and a nifty link! It makes me want to rethink my hard drive names with something more creative. :p

Butterfly Conservatory Photos

Sunday, June 13, 2004

Hmmm this is the third time I’ve taken out the camera to take photos in the last four days. Today, my mom dragged me to Humber Nurseries, because she had two coupons worth $3 off any purchase, and they were expiring soon, so she needed me to use the second one. I’d already been there before and I knew I’d be bored following her around. (I think some of the plants and flowers are soooo pretty, but I don’t feel the need to see them again!) I went to the Butterfly Observatory instead. The conservatory was pretty empty and there were only 3 other people in there (a mom and her two kids) so I don’t think that was the best time for viewing the butterflies though. You can see the photos I took here. Note: my favourite ones are this one, this one and this one.

Just before I left, I was looking at the wall, where they had pinned a series of cocoons. I was trying to decide how to take a photo of them. Suddenly, one of them moved! I gave a huge yell, and then suddenly something else fluttered away to my right! I was so shocked, I thought they were all dead. The butterfly I took a photo of didn’t budge when I yelled, but it did flap its wings. grin
