The Springfield Map

Tuesday, February 10, 2004

This is pretty cool - a detailed map of the fictional town of Springfield, home of The Simpsons (the TV show). Who would have thought there’d be enough information to make a map?? 742 Evergreen Terrace is located in Quad Three.

Baahhh

I hope no one went to my blog earlier and saw a huge mess - I forgot to close a link tag. *oops*

I’m having trouble installing the trial version of EE, so I can’t get to see what it looks like. *sobs* I tried it in two different hosts, with no luck. *sobs more* Looking at the price tag I probably won’t get it anyway .. I want it of course, but it wouldn’t be worth it.

Also, the new version of Mozilla Firebird is out, 0.8. The thing is, it’s changed its name to FireFox. I don’t really like the name ... I don’t even want to upgrade from 0.7 coz I’ll lose the name! :p

ExpressionEngine is here

Click by Number

Monday, February 09, 2004

I hated those paint by number drawings, where you were given an outline with a bunch of numbers corresponding to the colour it’s supposed to be painted with.

But the online version from SegPlay is really addicting! I spent ages on the complex ones. There’s a timer that winds down, but I can never finish them in time. smile

Here’s one that I completed:

Computer Troubles

Monday, February 09, 2004

Warning: All I’m going to do in this entry is complain!!

Lately my computer has been freezing for a few seconds, and then displaying the blue screen of death, and then restarting. This happens without warning, so I can’t even save. Sometimes it happens within 5 minutes of me turning it on, sometimes it happens in half an hour. I’ve been going paranoid, saving anything that I do every few seconds. There’s some text on the blue screen explaining what happened, but since the computer restarts I can’t read what it says.

I did a quick search on google for help and found out why this was happening - my processor is overheated and maybe there is dust. This could very well be the reason - my laptop is always very noisy even if I’m not running anything (i.e. the fan is always on), and I’ve been bring my laptop everywhere, so dust could easily have gotten inside the hardware. I know I could bring it into Future Shop and see if I could get it fixed, as I’m still under warranty, but that means I would have to give up my laptop for at least a week. I can’t do that, not with all the assignments I have to complete. I suppose during Reading Week (starting Feb 23rd, when I have a week off from school) I could bring it in, so I’ll have to live with the constant restarting for now. sad

This happens only in Windows though, and not when I’m using Linux.

Also, my mouse doesn’t work in Linux. At first I thought that it was because my laptop has a touchpad, so if you had both an external mouse and a touchpad the system would get confused. But when I checked the support databases, it said that it shouldn’t matter, and Linux should automatically detect the external mouse. I tried plugging in with my roommate’s mouse, and hers worked. The touchpad was automatically disabled, too. The thing is, my roommate’s mouse is a PS/2 mouse, and I have a USB mouse. The support database said that USB mice should work as well, so I wonder why mine doesn’t??

Saturday Senses #24

Sunday, February 08, 2004

I actually completed this on a Saturday, for once. smile

[taste]:: If you could no longer taste any liquids/drinks, which liquid/drink would you miss and which would you be happy not to taste anymore?
I’d miss the taste of water. I find that water has a taste, and it’s always the most refreshing drink for me. I like caffienated drinks too though, so I’d miss coke. I certainly wouldn’t miss the taste of fish soup.

[touch]:: If you could no longer feel physical pain, which kind of pain would you be happy to never feel again (I know all sorts of pain are bad, but choose one that is specifically the worst for you).
I wouldn’t ever want to get headaches. When I get headaches, they hurt so much, it’s like someone constantly pounding on my head. The only way I can get rid of the headache is to lie down and sleep.

[sight]:: If you could no longer read, which part of your life would be most affected? Additionally, look around you and try to imagine how many things you wouldn’t be able to do in the room you’re in if that ever happened.
I like reading for pleasure, mostly fiction, comic books and sometimes magazines. But I also read to learn. If I could no longer read, then it’d affect my life much more than it would if I didn’t have one of the other senses.

[smell]:: Which food’s smell is so much “part of the food” that you’d miss smelling if you could no longer smell anything you eat?
Hmm, after thinking of this question of a while I still couldn’t come up with anything. I guess I’d miss the smell of cooked meat. All kinds, cooked in all ways. Mmmmmm….

[hearing]:: If you could no longer hear people’s voices, whose voice would you be glad not to hear and whose voice would you miss hearing?
This may be silly, but I think I’d miss the sound of my own voice the most. Because if I spoke, and I couldn’t hear what was coming out of my mouth, it would really annoy me. I would be glad not to hear the laugh that someone I know makes - very irritating.

words and dialects

Friday, February 06, 2004

School = BUSY. The days just go by so fast and today I realize I haven’t made a post in here since Tuesday.

I have some more links I found dealing with words and dialects. The first one is a survey of whether people in North America say pop or soda when referring to carbonated drinks. Pop wins, but by a bit. I say “pop” too, but when I was younger I’d say “soft drink”. The site has an interactive map showing the responses.

And that site led me to the site of another survey that was conducted. It has a lot more questions, and it’s a lot like that dialect meme that was going around a while back. It’s really interesting! In some of the questions, I had no idea other people would pronounce things differently or have a different term than what I did.

...

And I need to find a better name for my words blog.

oh, when we were kids

Tuesday, February 03, 2004

I love this site, iusedtobelieve.com. They have a collection of things people believed when they were kids.

Here are two of my favourites:

I used to believe that if you farted while swimming in the pool, it could propel you foward really fast.

i used to belive that if you swallowed your chewing gum it would all get stuck in your bum and then one day it would explode into a big bubble “he,he”

Hmmm, what silly things did I use to believe when I was a kid??

- I used to believe that if I swallowed orange seeds, they would grow into orange trees in my stomach. (I can blame my great-aunt for this one.)

- When I was a kid, I knew about the northern and southern hemisphere, and that if it was winter in one, it was summer in the other. But, I thought that also meant the months were different. For example, I thought that you would always have Christmas in the winter time. So people in Australia would celebrate their Christmas in June, when it was my summer time and their winter time. When it was June for me, it would be December for Australians.

I was sooo surprised when I went to Australia during the Christmas holidays and found out that not only was it still December, but they celebrated Christmas and the New Year at the same time as I did!!

What if the Lord of the Rings had been written by someone else? Would would it be like? Here are some really cool interpretations!

Outkast - Hey Ya

OutKast to Peanuts

Monday, February 02, 2004

I’ve been listening to this all afternoon!! It’s OutKast’s song “Hey Ya” put to a Peanuts (Snoopy) video. The original link was down (the video was made by this site), and it took me a while to find another link for it.
