FOAF

Saturday, February 28, 2004

What is this FOAF (Friend of a Friend) thing exactly?  I already have two of these FOAF files - one generated by my livejournal, and one by my tabulas. And so now I have two profiles here and here. But it doesn’t seem too useful yet. Also, I’d be better off merging the two files together, but I don’t know if that can be done. I’ll just wait and see how others use this.

Mischievious

Wednesday, February 25, 2004

Some random things:

- I just had some yummy watermelon for dessert. My mom put salt on them so they would taste sweeter.
- I’ve been pronouncing the word mischievious as miss-chee-vee-ous for ages!! I didn’t know that that was the wrong pronounciation, as mentioned here.
- It’d be funny if some of these logos made their way onto Google’s website.
- LiveJournal has been slow all day. sad
- My dad gave me an old USB mouse of his, which works in Linux! (My old mouse didn’t work)

Phrase Finder

Tuesday, February 24, 2004

I’ve been spending the last half hour reading some entries here. They have a list of proverbs, cliches, and quotes, with the meaning/origin behind them.

Here are some interesting things I found out:
- the meaning behind a white elephant sale.
- there are several phrases where the origin is unknown, and there are several possible origins, like the Real McCoy.
- the meaning behind mum’s the word - I couldn’t figure out how they came up with this before.
- the phrase pass the buck may have led to the use of the word “buck” as slang for a dollar.

And so Reading Week starts

Sunday, February 22, 2004

Went back to T.O. today. My parents were out, so my brother picked me up from the subway station. It started snowing today, not too heavily, but enough that we had to shovel the driveway before my brother could get the car in the garage. Shovelling snow is something that I don’t miss while living in an apartment.

My brother’s reading week started last week, so tommorrow he’s going back to university. Which sucks, because I only get to see him for 2 days.

Then, at night, my brother took the car to go out with his friends. I stayed at home. A few minutes after he left, the doorbell rang. It was him, he got stuck on the ice while trying to get out of the driveway. So we spent a while shovelling the driveway so that the car would move, and then shovelled some more because we didn’t want my dad to get stuck when he came back. Stupid snow. smile

Here’s my list of things to do during the reading week….
School related
- cs307 assignment 3.
- cs307 project.
- study for cs307 midterm that’s right after reading week.
- cs305 assignment 2.
- acs 461 research assignment.

Non-school related
- back up computer files
- try and fix dad’s old computer
- get lots of sleep
- try out EE

Friday Five - The Last Time I….

Saturday, February 21, 2004

I’m one day late for this thing.

When was the last time you…

1. ...went to the doctor? In September of last year. My skin suddenly became red and itchy all over my body. The doctor couldn’t help, luckily the itchiness went away by itself after a week or so.

2. ...went to the dentist? Ahh, I haven’t gone to the dentist in over a year. Which is why my mom was bugging me about setting up an appointment with the dentist when I go back to T.O. for slack week.

3. ...filled your gas tank? I don’t own a car, so I don’t need to fill up. Public transportation is good enough for me, for now. The gas prices are so expensive nowadays.

4. ...got enough sleep? Today tongue. I slept for like 9 hours. But when was the last time I had a resting, peaceful sleep? Way too long ago…...

5. ...backed up your computer? Mid October. That was because I had to format my computer. I really should back my computer up again soon, as soon as I get some CD-Rs.

BlogLines subscribers

Thursday, February 19, 2004

BlogLines earlier this week announced that they added this new feature to their service. (BlogLines is a web-based news aggregator). You can pick a feed and BlogLines will list the other users who have subscribed to this feed. I surfed through other user’s subscriptions and found a lot of interesting new feeds to add to my own list. It’s so useful! BlogLines also has this list of recommended feeds to add, but they always tend to give me the same feeds.

Some random comments
- I’ve noticed a lot of b2/WP powered weblogs having the same description in their feed - “babbings !” I realize this is the default description but it’s funny.
- Adding a favicon makes your feed stand out a little bit more.
- I know that there are 3 people (not including me) who have added my feed to their bloglines subscriptions, my site stats tell me that. But it only shows one person besides me as subscribed to my feed, since she’s the only person who made her subscriptions public. I wonder who the other 2 people are…

Vanity Plates

Thursday, February 19, 2004

A while back I wrote in a Friday Five entry about vanity plates, and that if I had the chance to have my own custom license plate, I’d pick “DB87”. And Nora asked me why.
