Function Customizer

Tuesday, January 20, 2004

Michel.be’s Function Customizer looks very powerful. I like the fact that it can work on multiple weblogs and/or categories. But the only thing I can think of using it for is for links to recent comments. For now, that is…

Love Actually is All Around

Monday, January 19, 2004

On Saturday I saw Love Actually. It was a good funny movie! There were a ton of great actors in it. The movie follows the lives of several different couples, and the love that blossoms (or doesn’t) between them. At first I was overwhelmed and then got kind of bored with all the different characters, but in the end it all made sense! Only complaint is: more than enough nudity in it.

The soundtrack for the movie is good, too. That actress singing at the end was amazing!

Saturday Senses Week 21

Monday, January 19, 2004

Here’s the scene: you start walking from nowhere and its completely dark.

[6th sense]:: How do you feel about being in the dark? As you walk, do you feel that there’s something good or bad ahead?
If it’s completely dark? I’d probably be scared, especially if it’s a lonely, quiet, and late at night. Although I’d know that nothing bad would happen, I’d probably be tense and jumpy too.

[smell]:: First you smell something. What is it?
The smell of fear. (From me). smile

[hearing]:: Then you hear something. Can you identify what it is? Where does it come from? Is it loud? Is it pleasing, scary, irritating?
I’d hear the slight breeze of the wind, and the leaves and branches making a “ssshh, shhh” sound. It’d be scary and make me feel even worse.

[touch]:: Is it cold or hot? What are you wearing? What do you feel beneath your feet as you walk in the dark?
It’d be slightly chilly. I wouldn’t be wearing enough to feel comfortable. There’d probably be leaves on the ground too, so I’d hear them crinkle as I walked over them.

[sight]:: Things start to clear up. What do you see? Where are you? Whats around you? Describe your environment. It could be anything, realistic or not.
I’d see trees all around me, I’d be on a road in the wood. Then I’d see headlights, and a car coming from the other direction, but the car would pass quickly.

[taste]:: Is there something in this place that you can drink or eat? What is it? Do you eat/drink it?
Nope. I’d be completely alone.

[touch]:: Now that you can see what’s around you, do you touch anything? How do you interact with this environment?
I’d try to get out of the wood as fast as I could.

[sight]:: You now realize there’s an exit. Do you want to get out or would you rather stay? Why? Describe the exit. Do you leave?
The exit would be just a dim bluish light leading out of the woods. I’d hurry to the exit.

I remember once, in Grade 9, my class went on a trip to the Kawartha Region (near Peterborough, I think). It wasn’t really camping, because we did get to stay in a cabin. Anyway, one night every single one of us had to walk down a stretch of road, by ourselves, in the dark. I was pretty scared at that point, I remember walking really fast so that I could get it over with. When I was given the scene above, I remembered this moment.

LiveJournal Protected Post

Saturday, January 17, 2004

It took me all morning to figure this out, but I got it working!

I am pleased to present my livejournal entries. Even the protected entries. If you’ve registered already on my site, you should be able to see it. This is the equivalent of being added on my friends list on lj.

Now I have to quickly go get dressed and head out the door (going downtown for lunch). I will explain some more later.

Edit: I said I’d explain, but now that I think about it, there isn’t even much to explain. I wanted to see if I could get an rss feed of my journal, even with protected posts, and I managed to do that (thanks to this post). So I thought, why not parse the rss feed and place it on my site? That way you don’t have to be signed up with LiveJournal to view those posts.

75th anniversary of Tintin

Saturday, January 17, 2004

2004 is the 75th anniversary of the famous Tintin comic book. The strip first appeared in 1929 with “The Adventures of Tintin in the Land of the Soviets”, which, incidentally, I read for the first time in December. It’s really amazing how the author, Herge, continued on with the strip for many years, until 1976. (The book after that was left unfinished as Herge died in 1983.) My favourite character has to be Captain Haddock and his infamous insults.

Anyway, as I was just checking out Yahoo’s most emailed photos, I came across this photo of a Proboscis monkey. And you know what it reminded me of? Rastapopulous (one of Tintin’s many enemies) and his big nose!

Guess the Character

Saturday, January 17, 2004

Ha! I beat this game. By getting you to answer a bunch of questions, the game tries to figure out what dictator or sitcom character you’re thinking of. It was pretty scary at first, because it got the first 4 characters I thought of right. (I stuck with sit-com characters since I was more familiar with them.)

My choices were…
1. Monica from Friends (the game got this one right)
2. Will from Will and Grace (the game got this one right)
3. Fry from Futurama (the game got this one right)
4. Michelle from Full House (the game got this one right)

Then I finally fooled it with Eddie on Friends, (who was Chandler’s roommate at one point), but then, he was a minor character.

the friday five - quotes

Friday, January 16, 2004

1. What does it say in the signature line of your emails?
Directly cut and pasted. (It’s supposed to be an owl if you view it with a fixed width font)

2. Did you have a senior quote in your high school yearbook? What was it? If you haven’t graduated yet, what would you like your quote to be?
I did have a senior quote, but I don’t remember what it was exactly. I’ll have to look it up in my yearbook. :p

3. If you had vanity plates on your car, what would they read? If you already have them, what do they say?
This question is easy. It’d either be “DB87” or “2VONNE”. (Explanation is here)

4. Have you received any gifts with messages engraved upon them? What did the inscription say?
My dad gave me a fountain pen many years ago, with my name engraved on the pen cap. (I love this fountain pen, I don’t even use it often because I don’t want to ruin it.) Also, I once volunteered for a job fair, and as a present I got this engraved ballpoint pen with “All Campus Job Fair” on it.

5. What would you like your epitaph to be?
.... ?! .... have to double check what that word means first.

Ok, I guess it would say “She lived a long life and made a difference in the world.”

Bachelorette 2

Friday, January 16, 2004

Woah, it’s been almost exactly one year since the first Bachelorette show aired. This year, I also watched the premiere of the second one. However, I have night class on Wednesday, so I’ll probably be missing the first half-hour of it every time. Anyway the new bachelorette is Meredith, from the last series of Bachelor, and I’m glad it’s her, she seems nice, and I know her a bit already. I didn’t think a lot of the guys there were particularly handsome, though. :p

Pet Fat

Friday, January 16, 2004

There’s a site that sells a replica of a lump of fat. By keeping it around, it makes you think about what you eat. I dunno if it works, but during the holidays I saw one of those things in a store window. (It was a store near the local library, and I passed it several times). It looked much bigger than one pound - a big yellowish/orangish gel like thing. It sure looked gross.
