Willie Traynor is a young journalist who takes over the local paper in Clanton, Mississipi in 1970. The previous owners of the paper went bankrupt, and within a few years Willie managed to turn it around and increase its readership. Willie Traynor had to report on the brutal murder and rape of a young black widow. The perpetrator belonged to a dangerous and reclusive family in those parts. The book is mainly about the trial, Willie’s gradual acceptance into Clanton, the separation between blacks and whites at the time, and Willie’s friendly relationship with a black woman named Callie Ruffin.
